What is the Curly Girl Method?

– Curly Girl metoden handler om at passe på sine krøller og få dem til at blive smukke, ved ikke at anvende ingredienser i ens hårprodukter, der skader krøllerne.
The method can also be used for permanent hair and of course also for smooth hair if you want to have well-groomed and healthy hair.

Curly Girl method is made by hairdresser Lorraine Massey. She found out that curly hair does not benefit from products with silicone, dehydrating alcohols and sulphates.

On the Curly girl method, it is recommended that you "wash" your hair with a conditioner, a so-called co-wash. This is done not to dry out yours hair and scalp with the various sulfates found in common shampoos. If you balms yours hair, your hair maintains its natural moisture and gets new moisture from the conditioner you add.
Some find that their hair becomes greasy if they only use co-wash and therefore use a sulphate-free shampoo - a low-poo.

You have to avoid silicones in their hair products as they lie like a skin on their hair. This makes the hair look healthy and well-groomed, but it is often not. The silicone skin also means that the good ingredients from hair cure and conditioner cannot penetrate the hair and the hair therefore does not receive the nutritious ingredients you add.

The only product that can wash the silicone out of the hair again is a sulphate shampoo. So there is a vicious circle, you dry the hair with the shampoo and afterwards you lie a coat on the hair with the silicone.

There are drying alcohols and silicones available in many of the common hair styling products you can buy.
In our webshop, CurlsForYou you can buy products without silicone, sulphates and dehydrating alcohols.

How to get started with the Curly girl method?

Before you get started with the Curly Girl Method, make a final wash to get all the bad ingredients out of your hair.
For this you need a sulphate-containing shampoo without silicone to wash the wax and silicone residue out of the hair.

You have to make a last wash to get all the silicone out of your hair. Silicone can clog the scalp and close the hair inside. The silicone immediately gives a beautiful and well-groomed hair, but lays itself as a barrier so that the hair cannot absorb moisture.
Once you have made a final wash of your hair, you can start the method immediately. It requires you to have a so-called co-wash (conditioner wash) and a conditioner.

Step 1 – Co-wash/Low-poo

In the future when you have to "wash" your hair, you need a co-wash, you should use it instead of shampoo, or you can use a low-poo.

It is important that you scrub and massage your scalp for a 4-5 minute period to loosen any dirt from the scalp.

Then use a conditioner in the hair. As you put a conditioner in your hair, you straighten/detangle your hair with your fingers.
Leave the conditioner for 3-5 minutes.

If there doesn't stand co-wash on the product, you can recognize a co-wash that it has few ingredients and that there are often not many nourishing ingredients in them. If you are not interested in starting to buy an expensive co-wash, you can buy some cheap in most supermarkets and shops.

A low-poo is a shampoo without sulfate.

A conditioner is used in the lengths of the hair, just as you would normally use a conditioner. A conditioner is moisturizing or proteinaceous and makes one's hair get what it needs and the hair thrives and is in balance.

If necessary, dry the hair, not with a regular towel, but with a cotton t-shirt or a microfiber towel that you can squeeze out the water with.

The reason you should not use a regular towel is that you typically break your hair.

Step 2 - Styling

Before styling your hair it is a good idea to use a conditioner as a leave in. The leave inis giving the hair moisture between the washes. You can now style the hair with jelly, curl cream or something else so that the curls gather.
You can now style the hair with jelly, curl cream or something else so that the curls gather.

Be aware that in styling products there are often waxes that close the hair inside. There are none of our styling products that contain wax.

When you have styled your hair, you can advantageously get your hair in a plow. Plopping promotes curl shape and makes it more defined.

Plop = When you have put your hair up in a t-shirt or a microfiber towel. The hair must lie "on top of the head" when folding.

After styling and possibly. plopping, you can choose to air dry her hair, or to dry her hair with a diffuser with cold air.

You can also use hair clamps to create a natural lift and create faster drying.

It is important not to use hot air or straighteners on the method as it damages yours hair.

Step 3 - SOTC (Scrunch Out The Crunch

When your hair is completely dry it will probably be completely stiff by products, this must now be scrunched. You can scrunch cast out of the hair, using your hands, a t-shirt / microfiber towel or an oil.

There are many who are happy with products that give their hair cast, as they then find that the curls get less frizz and that their curls become more defined.

It is important first to scrunch the cast out of the hair when the hair is completely dry.
